From Kubaneya to Outpost: A Genealogy of the Palestinian Conceptualization of Jewish Colonialism in Palestine/Israel /
Honaida Ghanim

This article offers a preliminary sociohistorical study of the evolution of  the Palestinian conceptualization of Jewish colonization and the Jewish colonizer, from the onset of the Zionist colonial project to the present day. Tracing the changes in the natives’ conceptualization of the colonizer — from the earlier concepts of khawaja/kubaneya, through colonizer/colony and settler/settlement, to the more recent emphasis on outpost/extreme settler — the article demonstrates how this conceptualization has been shaped by the colonial project, by transformations of the Palestinian national project, and by the everyday interaction between the colonizer and the natives.

Four historical periods in the changing Palestinian conceptualization are outlined: from the onset of the Zionist Jewish project until 1948; between 1948 and 1967; between 1967 and 1995; and from 1995 onward. The article shows that constructing the colonizers/settlers within distinctive patterns is part and parcel of the rearrangement of the natives’ discourse in a colonial settler context. Indeed, the changing concepts through which the Palestinian chooses to conceptualize the colonizer in various stages suggest that the settler colonial project is still a dynamic process of proliferating settlement activity and continuous shaping of geopolitical borders vis-à-vis an ongoing decline of the Palestinian national project.
