מסה זו בוחנת את ״שאלת החיה״ על רקע העיסוק הציבורי והאקדמי העכשווי במשבר האקלים ובעידן האנתרופוקן. לטענתו של אילני, עידן זה, שבו הפכו פעולותיו של המין האנושי לכוח המשפיע ביותר על הנעשה בכדור הארץ, מציב אתגר מיוחד למסורות ההומניסטית והביקורתית של מדעי האדם, שמתקשות לחשוב על הרס הפלנטה ועל ההכחדה הזואולוגית ההמונית, שאנו עדים להם, באמצעות דרכי החשיבה והתיאור שייחודיות להן. לטענת אילני, המחשבה האנושית מעולם לא התנסתה בטרנספורמציה כה טוטלית של העולם. העובדה שהמצב הטכנולוגי ה״פוסט-טבעי״ יוצר סכנות חסרות תקדים וצורות חדשות של אלימות, שקורבנותיהן אינם אנושיים בלבד, מחייבת אותנו למצוא דרך לשלב בשיחה את קולותיהם של בעלי החיים הלא-אנושיים וגם את הקולות של הצמחים, של האדמה ושל תופעות הטבע השונות.

The Role of the Intellectual in the Age of Extinction

This essay examines “the question of the animal” against a background of contemporary public and academic concern with climate change in the Anthropocene era. He argues that this era, in which humankind’s activities have become the most powerful influence over what happens on the planet, presents a special challenge to the humanist and critical traditions of human studies, which find it difficult, with their unique ways of thought and description, to think about the destruction of the planet and the mass zoological extinction we are witnessing. According to Ilani, human thought never experienced such a total transformation of the world. The fact that the post-nature technological situation is creating unprecedented threats and new forms of violence, whose victims are not only humans, requires us to find ways to introduce, into the conversation, the voices of nonhuman animals and of the plants, the soil, and the various natural phenomena.

تبحث هذه المقالة "سؤال الحيوان" على خلفية الانشغال الجماهيريّ والأكاديميّ المعاصر بالأزمة المناخيّة وبعصر الأنثروبوسين، حيث يدّعي أنّ هذا العصر، الذي تحوّلت فيه أعمال الجنس البشريّ إلى القوة الأكثر تأثيرًا في الكرة الأضيّة، يضع تحديًا خاصًا للتقاليد الإنسانيّة والنقديّة لعلوم الإنسان، التي تجد صعوبة في التفكير بتدمير الكوكب والإبادة الحيوانيّة الشاملة التي نشهدها، بواسطة طرق التفكير والوصف الخاصة بها. يدّعي إيلاني أنّ التفكير الإنسانيّ لم يمرّ أبدًا بتجربة تحوّل للعالم بهذه الشموليّة. تُلزم الحقيقة بأنّ الوضع التكنولوجيّ "ما بعد الطبيعيّ" ينتج مخاطر غير مسبوقة وأشكالًا جديدة من العنف ضحاياها ليسوا من البشر فقط، بإيجاد طريقة تضاف للمحادثة فيها أيضًا أصوات الحيوانات غير البشريّة وأصوات النباتات والأرض وظواهر الطبيعة المختلفة.
