Feminism and the Politics of the Commons in an Era of Primitive Accumulation

A translation of an essay by Silvia Federici, one of the leading Marxist-feminist intellectuals today, where she introduces the politics of the commons, which was also the basis of documenta 15. In a world divided to smithereens and privatized to death, Federici shows that the demand for commoning – returning resources, sites, rights and modes of operation from the private to the public domain – has become a notable strategy of action of the socialist left throughout the world. She describes the jurisdiction of commons, from water and earth through virtual social rights, to forms of socialization and association, and the different registers of the struggle over them within the capitalist world (the cultivation of public gardens, for example) and on the paths of resistance to it or escape from it (for example, in the struggles of anticapitalist activist movements or the establishment of communal autonomous districts). Federici shows how the question of commons is bound from the outset in the feminist cause: the work of reproducing life (from the concept of reproduction in its feminist-Marxist sense) – for which women are usually responsible and which is the basis for their discrimination and exploitation, because it is not included in the realm of hired work in the capitalist economy – can be an opening for a different social paradigm where the collectivization of the work of reproduction, nourishment, rearing and education, will lead to the commoning of social work in general.
